The four pieces that matter
1) A machine that can hold a real (non-pressurized) basket. 2) A grinder that can step or stepless into espresso. 3) A precision basket that matches the portafilter. 4) A 0.1 g scale so dose is not a vibe. Everything else — WDT, nicer tamper, thermometer — is week-two, not day-one.
Two honest starter builds
Milk and a small counter: Bambino Plus + Encore ESP + a 54 mm precision basket + a cheap scale. Espresso-forward: Gaggia Classic Evo + Encore ESP + a 58 mm IMS basket. Both builds assume you will throw away the dual-wall basket in the box.
What to skip at the start
