Single-wall vs dual-wall espresso baskets
Oct 11, 2026 · 5 min
What Breville says single-wall and dual-wall baskets are for, how Gaggia’s pressurized filter differs in name, and how to choose by beans and grinder.
The short version
A single-wall basket has plain holes in one layer of metal, and the shot depends on your grind, dose and tamp. A dual-wall basket has a second layer that, in Breville’s words, regulates the pressure so the shot is less sensitive to those. Breville’s manual points single-wall at fresh beans and dual-wall at pre-ground or older coffee. That’s the maker’s advice, not our taste test.
What Breville says (Bambino Plus)
The Bambino Plus ships with both kinds, in 1-cup and 2-cup sizes. Breville says single-wall baskets should be used with fresh whole beans roasted less than 30 days ago, because they let you experiment with grind, dose and tamp for a more balanced espresso. It says dual-wall baskets are for pre-ground coffee and beans past the 30-day roast date, because they regulate the pressure and help optimise the extraction regardless of grind, dose, tamp pressure or freshness. Breville’s dose guide is 8–11 g for the 1-cup basket and 16–19 g for the 2-cup basket.
What Gaggia says (Classic E24)
Gaggia’s spec page lists three filters in the box: one pressurized filter for 1 or 2 cups, and two traditional ones. It notes a regional difference for 120V US machines, so check what’s in yours. Gaggia’s FAQ says to remove the frothing jet device from the filter holder if you want to use the traditional filters. “Pressurized” is Gaggia’s word and “dual-wall” is Breville’s, and neither maker says they’re the same design, so don’t treat them as identical.
Which to use
Pre-ground coffee, or beans that have been sitting a while: use the forgiving basket the maker supplies. Fresh beans and a grinder that can hold an espresso grind: try the single-wall or traditional basket, and expect to dial in. It’s easier to learn the grind first. A single-wall shot depends more on your grind, because the grind does more of the work. See where to start with grind size.
Changing baskets
Match the basket size to your portafilter (54 mm on the Bambino Plus, 58 mm on the Classic E24). Breville’s manual says to adjust the grind amount and size when you switch from a single to a double basket, or the reverse. Dose to the basket you’re using, and change one thing at a time.
What this guide doesn’t cover
It doesn’t rank brands or pick a best basket. It also doesn’t cover aftermarket precision baskets beyond a pointer to our IMS review. For the two machines these makers describe, see our Bambino Plus vs Gaggia Classic Pro E24 comparison.
